Students who enroll in the Lineworker Pre-apprentice Certificate after completing the LBB will have a credit towards the full program.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW:



The LBB is an introductory course designed to immerse students in the foundational skills of the lineworker trade as Groundman. It offers hands-on experience and teaches essential safety protocols, equipment handling / installations, and climbing techniques all within a condensed, high-impact training environment. This Bootcamp is ideal for those interested in exploring a lineworker career before committing to a longer training program.


WHO SHOULD APPLY:



• Recent High School Graduates:
Those considering a career in trades and wanting a firsthand experience of linework.

• Electricians Upgrading To Lineworker:
Electrical trades people who are ready to join the powerline industry and need the right training to get started.

• Communication Technicians Upgrading To Lineworker:
People who already have the equipment / tools for the job and have been climbing but need further technical powerline proceedures and contacts to enter Powerline Industry.

• Career Changers:
People exploring trades who wish to gain basic skills and industry insight.

• Young Adults:
Individuals seeking an exciting career or entry into the powerline industry.




REQUIREMENTS:



1. Minimum Age:
You must be at least 18 years old by the start of the program.

2. Physical Readiness:
The program is physically demanding, so students should be in good health and able to participate in outdoor training activities.

3. CSA-Approved Safety Boots:
You’ll need a new pair of CSA-approved safety boots (we reimburse up to $200 with a receipt).

4. Basic English Communication Skills:
For safety reasons, students must be able to communicate clearly and follow instructions.

No prior electrical or Linework experience is required as this bootcamp is designed as an entry-level introduction to the trade to start as a Groundman.

COURSE INCLUDES:



• Basic Pole Climbing:
Students will learn essential techniques of pole climbing, to build confidence and proficiency at heights.

• Fall Arrest:
Training on fall protection systems to ensure safety while working at heights, covering equipment use, inspection, and emergency procedures.

• Common Safety Orientation:
A general introduction to industry safety standards and protocols, preparing students for safe practices in powerline environments.

• First Aid / CPR:
Basic emergency medical skills, including first aid and CPR, enabling students to respond effectively to common on-site injuries or emergencies.

• Basic CALM (Career and Life Management):
An introductory course focused on essential career and life management skills, covering goal setting, time management, and personal responsibility to support success in both professional and personal life. Employer searches and resume building to reach out to prospective job opportunities within the utility industry.

• Basic Powerline Understanding & Awareness:
An overview of basic energy principles and powerline structure, helping students understand the flow of electricity and the importance of maintaining safety near power sources.

• Basic Proper Communication:
Training on effective communication techniques vital for teamwork, coordination, and maintaining safety on job sites.

• Basic Knots & Rigging:
Instruction on fundamental knots and rigging skills necessary for handling equipment and securing loads in powerline work.

• Basic Life-Saving Rules:
Essential rules and protocols aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring safety in high-risk scenarios, with a focus on critical lineworker safety.

• Basic Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and AEUC:
Introduction to Alberta’s OH&S regulations and the Alberta Electrical Utility Code (AEUC), emphasizing regulatory compliance and safe work practices.

• Basic Metering:
Students will gain a foundational understanding of electrical metering, learning how to read and understand meters used in monitoring electricity flow.

• Basic Transformers:
Here students learn the basics in underground / overhead Transformers, learning how to connect / disconnect DELTA / WYE configurations and banks.

• Basic Powerline Procedures:
Students will have the chance to preform a few of these basic powerline proceedures from jumpers, dead-ending / soft-siding, tying-in, cross arm install, handline / rope-blocks techniques, operation of switches, guy wires, streetlights, meters, splices, cable skinning and pressing squeezes / insulinks.


These courses equip students with the fundamental skills, knowledge, and safety awareness they need to begin their journey in the powerline industry.


PATHWAY TO CERTIFICATION:




GNLC CERT




Graduates of the LBB who wish to continue their training will receive a credit toward GNLC’s Lineworker Pre-apprentice Certificate, which launches in September 2025. This full program provides comprehensive training for individuals aiming to become certified lineworkers.

1. Who is this bootcamp for?

This 10-day program is designed for individuals interested in starting a career in the powerline industry. It’s ideal for high school graduates, career changers, or anyone looking to gain hands-on skills and essential certifications to enter the trades.


2. What certifications will I earn during the bootcamp?

Upon successful completion, students will receive:

• Lineworker Basics Bootcamp Certificate (GNLC Certified)

• First Aid (Standard with CPR Level C & AED)

• Fall Protection

• Common Safety Orientation (CSO)

• Chainsaw Basics (Awareness level)


3. What will I learn in the program?

You’ll gain foundational skills and knowledge in:

• Pole climbing & climbing safety

• Rigging and knots

• Powerline theory

• Powerline construction

• Safe use of tools & Truck basics

• Career preparation & life management for trades


4. When does the bootcamp start?

We offer three upcoming bootcamp intakes:

• June 16 – June 27, 2025

• July 7 – July 18, 2025

• August 11 – August 22, 2025

Each program runs Monday to Friday over a 2-week period (10 days total).


5. Where is the program located?

All training takes place at our GNLC yard and classroom facility: SATO Building – 5107 50 Avenue, Millet, Alberta


6. What is the cost of the program?

The current program fee is $3,900 CAD, which covers instruction, certifications, and hands-on training. If you signed up before the price increase, we will honour the original $2,000 rate, as long as your commitment is confirmed before the course fills up.


7. What do I need to bring?

Students must bring:

• CSA-approved work boots (new or gently used)

• Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing

• Notebook and pen

We will provide each student with safety glasses and work gloves.


8. What will I receive as part of the program?

Each student will receive:

• 1 Hi-Viz Short Sleeve Shirt

• 1 Hi-Viz Long Sleeve Shirt

• 1 Pair of Safety Glasses

• 1 Hard Hat

• 1 Lineworker Basics Bootcamp Handbook

• $200 Safety Boot Reimbursement (with proof of purchase for new CSA-approved work boots)

Yes. We recommend:

Early booking is strongly recommended.


10. Is transportation provided?

Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the training yard daily. Free parking is available on site.


11. How do I apply?

Seats are limited and confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.

13. Will I be guaranteed a job after completing the bootcamp?

While employment is not guaranteed, you’ll gain the certifications, skills, and industry exposure that employers are looking for. GNLC also offers access to our Employer Directory and Job Portal, showcasing opportunities locally and across Canada.
